About Our Home
The Sierra is home to 600,000 people, 3500 plant, 572 animal, and 321 aquatic species. General Sherman, the world's largest tree by volume lives here. There are over 2,000 freshwater lakes in the Sierra Nevada and nearly 100 named rivers.
The mountains catch precipitation and rivers deliver water to food supplies throughout California
The forests are key to carbon sequestration and achieving net zero by 2050
Snowpack acts as a natural reservoir, storing water in the form of snow during the colder months and gradually releasing it as meltwater during the warmer months.
The actions we take today will impact snowpack at the end of the century. Without change, temperatures in the Sierra are projected to warm by 6-9 F and snowpack reduced by 60%.
